South Pembina Community Initiative
Converge Community Church is launching the South Pembina Community Initiative to partner with local individuals and businesses who are passionate about making an impact in their communities. We aim to breakdown the barriers that cause isolation and encourage healthy interaction and support within our own community.
WHY?
Seeing immigration levels in Winnipeg triple since 2005, as well as an influx of international students in the community, there is a rising number of residents who do not fluently speak English (60% of children in the Pembina Trails school division alone). Many of them are international professionals unrecognized by Canadian standards who are unable to work in their given field, but must complete a comprehensive English test to remain in Canada. This language barrier makes integrating into a new community challenging and hinders the access of services in that community.
With cost of living on the rise, there is an increase in the number of families living on the edge of poverty. This barrier is often unseen in the community, but causes shame, withdrawal, and stress. Not only does this affect the overall health of individuals, but it also prevents the healthy integration and development of their families.
The South Pembina Community Initiative aims to connect businesses and individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their own community. When we work together, we can accomplish exponentially more and strengthen relationships within our community.

How We Make a Difference

- The English Learning Project provides both adults and children the opportunity to learn and practice conversational English in a safe environment that fosters the development of meaningful relationships and success in their business, academic, and personal ventures.
- The Canadian Christmas Feast invites underprivileged families from the community to join together to experience some traditions of the Canadian Christmas season. With a delicious sit-down meal, this time provides a chance to build deeper connections with others in a fun and family friendly environment.
- The Winter Survival Workshop is especially important for those new to Canada who are unequipped and unknowledgeable about the extreme weather that Manitoba brings through the winter months. This event brings awareness of how to stay safe and warm, and provides resources that allow each person to leave with clothing that will help them keep warm throughout the winter.
- Our Welcome Back Community BBQ brings the community together at the end of a busy summer season. This time of community allows new students and families in the area to join together for an afternoon of family fun in the sun.
- New this year, the Community Easter Egg Hunt brought the community together to enjoy some spring fun after a long and cold winter. The community is invited to bring their families and friends along to search for Easter eggs and connect with others in their neighborhood.
